Digitally publishing your own work is powerful and empowering. Surprisingly, creating ebooks with text, images, audio and hyperlinks is neither complicated nor expensive. By using EPUB, anyone can create an ebook, from elementary school students to university instructors.

Come hear about an exciting project on open-source online textbook creation, a discussion about the latest EPUB standard which supports wildly innovative e-publishing capabilities, and a demonstration of open-source publishing tools you can use to publish your own creative content.

Program
“Open-Source Online Textbooks”
Speaker: Dustin A. Lewis, H20 Project Manager and Technical Lead
Dustin will introduce us to a new suite of online classroom tools called H2O, developed and provided by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society in collaboration with the Harvard Law School Library. H2O allows professors to freely develop, remix, and share online textbooks under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License.

“Shifting Forward in Digital Publishing: EPUB 3″
Speaker: Nettie Lagace, Associate Director of Programs at NISO
Nettie will provide an overview of EPUB 3, a standard which, while tightly integrated to Web standards, also offers many innovations, including support for rich media, interactivity, global language support, and styling and layout enhancements. EPUB 3 advances capabilities for better accessibility and more and richer metadata, thereby improving discoverability and the user experience.

“Creating Ebooks Using Open-Source Tools”
Speaker: Karie Kirkpatrick, Journals Technology Specialist at The MIT Press
Karie will provide an overview of open-source tools that you can use to convert your PDF or Word document into an ebook—either as an EPUB file or as a Kindle (MOBI) file. This presentation will focus on the PDFMasher conversion tool, the Sigil EPUB interface, and the Calibre ebook management tool.

iBooks Author is a free ebook authoring tool by Apple that runs on the Mac platform. It enables easy creation of interactive ebooks that can be sold or offered for free through Apple’s iBooks store. It also allows for exporting non-interactive PDF versions that can be sold anywhere. The interactive ebooks will run on iPads and can include embedded multimedia, such as slide shows, movies, quizzes, 3D images, embedded math formulas, and more.

In this informal talk, we’ll look at examples of some titles created with this tool, show the interface and how it works, and discuss why this is of interest to those looking to create interactive books.

Hope to see you there!

Whose side are you on – was he simply freeing information that should be publicly available, or did he truly commit a crime? What does this mean for research libraries? How is legislation keeping up with the digital revolution?

Food for thought:

Designing for mobile web experience offers a new set of challenges and opportunities for libraries. We need to better understand our users, plan for mobile-friendly content, ensure contextually relevant information, and collaborate with technology partners. On Monday April 23rd, join us to learn from colleagues who are taking their libraries mobile. Light snacks, coffee, and tea will be served.

Gather with colleagues for a happy-hour discussion on intellectual property.

When:
Thursday, December 1, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Where:
Uno’s Pizzeria (lower level)
22 JFK Street (Harv. Square)
Cambridge, MA

What:
Copyright, trademark and patents are not new concepts. Our founding fathers resolved the tension between commonwealth and monopoly though a civic republican model that allowed for private ownership so long as intellectual property was not held in perpetuity but given, after a short time, to the public. However, new technologies have made defining and protecting intellectual property ever more challenging. In recent months, Congress has begun to reform patent filings, and a lawsuit has been brought against HathiTrust, a shared digital library.

Gather with friends for a happy-hour discussion on what is current in the world of intellectual property law for the information professional.

For inspiration, read Frames from the Framers:

Come join in a lively (and informal) gathering to celebrate a few of our successes this year!

When:
Monday, September 26, starting at 5:30 to 7:30
Come and go at your leisure!
NEASIST will be with a Wonder Woman image on a stick!

Where:
Meadhall
4 Cambridge Center
Cambridge, MA 02142
http://themeadhall.com/

The gathering is to celebrate three great ASIS&T awards!

2011 Chapter of the Year Award
NEASIST received this ASIS&T honor for hosting a number of well-attended events including book clubs, social events, and presentations, and for engaging in outreach activities targeted at members and non-members alike.

2011 Chapter Innovation of the Year
NEASIST received this honor for our meet-up, “All Things e-Readers.” We gathered to share experiences of reading on Kindle, iPads, Nooks, smart phones, and other devices; and shared ideas on how to negotiate licenses, catalog books on Kindle, and manage patron expectation for using devices and accessing material.

Congratulations also to the Simmons GSLIS ASIS&T chapter for winning the Student Chapter of the Year Award! Simmons ASIS&T had a very successful year, hosting a number of heavily attended events, with some well known names, including Peter Suber and Nicole Hennig.

The 2011 NEASIS&T Student Travel Award goes to:

Adrienne Smith
adrienne.smith2 at mail.mcgill.ca
McGill University
School of Information Studies (Knowledge Management stream)

for her essay addressing the questions:
* Why she wishes to attend the 2011 ASIS&T Annual Meeting
* How she believes she will be able to use the conference experience to further her career
* How might NEASIS&T or ASIS&T benefit if she receives the award

Ms. Smith’s essay was impressively well-written and persuasive. She concludes that “simply joining professional associations does not automatically impact one’s career; like knowledge, a membership becomes more valuable the more it is used. Conferences and events like the Annual Meeting are opportunities to ‘get known’ and to begin building relationships with colleagues working in diverse environments. I believe that this conference experience will help me to establish a presence among my peers while maintaining momentum during my transition from a student to a professional.”

Ms. Smith will receive up to $1000 to help defray the costs of attendance at the 2011 ASIS&T Annual Meeting, “Bridging the Gulf:
Communication and Information in Society, Technology, and Work” which takes place October 7-12, 2011 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
http://asist.org/asist2011/am11cfp.html

Congratulations to Adrienne Smith for her excellent essay!
